Forks Over Knives

I just watched a fascinating documentary called Forks Over Knives. I recommend it to anyone who'd like to learn more about the connection between food and health. The film presents a compelling look at the benefits of eating a plant-based diet, free of animal products.

Even before watching the film, I’ve flirted with the idea of becoming vegan. Plant-based foods make me go weak in the knees with their rich colors, textures, and flavors. But in reality, dairy and I still maintain a strong love affair as well. I consider myself a practical vegetarian. I rarely eat meat or seafood, but allow room for flexibility. For example, I occasionally eat dishes prepared with chicken broth. And a couple of months ago I ordered “veggie tuna” at a deli, thinking it was some type of faux tuna. When I dug in, I quickly discovered it was the real thing, only with some celery sprinkled in. No worries. I savored every bite.

I'm not qualified to make dietary recommendations to others, and am not trying to do so. Everyone's body has different needs for optimal health. All I know is that I've personally experienced food to be wonderful medicine for ailments of all kinds. If you're interested, check out the documentary!

Thanks for the suggestion – looks great! Although not a vegetarian or vegan, I'm certainly open to learning more about the benefits.  I just pulled up more information on the documentary and the claims it made.  Interestingly, I've heard similar claims made but the link has been specifically to sugar – not animal products or processed goods generally. Some people have even gone so far to say that eating rice is the reason why Asian countries are healthier.  I think it's important to watch such documentaries with skepticism… although I imagine this one brings many truths.

Great points, Katherine–thanks. I agree that it’s good to have a healthy dose of skepticism when watching such documentaries. When it comes to food, my personal approach is simple: to eat what produces the best results in my body, mind, and spirit. Over the past couple of years I’ve been moving more toward a plant-based diet, and have never felt better. But everyone should make choices (perhaps along with their doctor’s recommendations) that are best for them! xo

    Hi Ann,
Nice Topic! Vegetables, Fruits and Seeds have full of natural enzymes and minerals. The healthy and long life depends on availability of all types of Enzymes in our body. This is why some people recommended eating fresh vegtables, fruits and seeds. This is why the Processed foods degenerates enzymes and useful minerals. I think the way we cook is very important to our health too. I believe that for all people around the world there are special kinds of diet. Karmic patterns( if one believes), Solar systems,Congenital patterns, Type of body ,etc affect our way of eating and drinking. There were unknown parts in nutrition science faded in human history. The Book “Herbs: the magic healera” Chapter 5 By Paul Twitchell has valuable notes about your subject.

Great to hear from you, HQ! I’ve also noticed that the fresher the food, the better I feel after eating. Thanks for this interesting information.
